Signs
Airport signs are a crucial part of the travel experience, guiding passengers, pilots, and staff through the complex network of terminals, runways, and facilities. These signs are designed to provide clear, concise, and easily recognizable information, ensuring safety and efficiency in airport operations.
What Are Airport Signs?
Airport signs are standardized indications to provide mandatory instruction, information on specific location or destination within the movement area, as well as to provide any other information necessary for the safe and efficient operations in the airfield as part of the surface movement guidance and control system (SMGCS) at an aerodrome.
Types of Signs:
· Mandatory instruction signs
Mandatory signs are essential to identify a location beyond which ATC authorisation is required to proceed. They consist of a white inscription on a red background. Typical mandatory instruction signs are the runway the designator signs located at each side of the runway holding position or no-entry signs to prevent the inadvertently access to a runway through a rapid exit taxiway.
·Information signs
These signs guide the pilots between the runway and the terminal or hangar. Key types include:
- Direction signs: Yellow signs with black inscriptions combining taxiway designators and arrows to indicate taxiway routes.
- Location signs: Black signs with yellow inscriptions denoting the current taxiway.
- Runway exit signs: Yellow signs with black inscriptions combining taxiway designators and arrows to indicate approaching runway exit taxiway.
- Runway vacated signs: Yellow signs with black inscriptions indicating to pilots leaving the runway the position from which the aircraft has cleared the ILS critical/sensitive area or the obstacle inner transitional surface, thus the following aircraft operation can take place on the runway in use.
- Intersection take-off signs: Yellow signs with black inscription indicating the remaining take-off distance available (TORA) in those taxiways intersecting the runway from which take-off operations take place.
- Destination signs: Yellow signs with black inscription specific final destinations in the airfield such as general aviation aprons or de-icing platforms.
·Apron Signs
Located in areas where planes park, load, and refuel, these signs help pilots and ground crew identify gates, parking stands, and servicing zones.
Materials and Design of Airport Signs
Airport signs are built to withstand harsh weather conditions whilst complying with the applicable ICAO frangibility requirements. Common materials include:
- Aluminium: Lightweight, anti-corrosion, and durable, typically used for the frame of the sign.
- Polycarbonate: Impact-resistant and UV-stable for the front panel of the signs.
Regulations Governing Airport Signs
Applicable Standard requirements for Approach Lighting Systems are defined in Chapter N of EASA CS ADR-DSN and Chapter 5.4 of ICAO Annex 14 Vol. I.
